Saskatchewan Polytechnic Receives Top Ranking on Canada’s Top 50 Research Colleges List

Re$earch InfoSource ranking published, Sask Polytech ranked first for income growth and second for completed research projects.

Saskatchewan Polytechnic received a first-place ranking for college research income growth and second for completed research projects in Re$earch InfoSource Inc.’s latest Top 50 Research Colleges list. The first-place rank is based on the $7.2 million of sponsored research income generated in 2019-2020. This is an increase of over 300 per cent from the $1.7 million of sponsored research income generated in 2018-2019. Sask Polytech ranked 12 overall on Canada’s Top 50 Research Colleges List for 2021.

“Applied research is where ideas meet reality, delivering practical solutions to everyday problems. This research could not be completed without sponsored research income. In addition to contributing to many applied research opportunities for faculty and students,” says Dr. Susan Blum, Applied Research and Innovation associate vice-president, “these research dollars support industry and community partners with the research and development crucial to turning ideas into working solutions.”

Sask Polytech received second place for number of applied research projects completed in 2019-2020. The Office of Applied Research and Innovation completed 245 projects. Some projects of note include creating an app to help attendees navigate Ag in Motion: Western Canada’s Farm Expo in Saskatchewan and Canada’s Outdoor Farm Show in Ontario. The app helps attendees get the most out of the show and provides valuable insights into the interests and behaviours of attendees to the event organizer, Glacier Farm Media. Another project with Innovative Stonecraft upcycled non-recyclable materials into material for new construction. Innovative Stonecraft is now manufacturing eco-friendly, lightweight composite veneers that add R-value to buildings.

“This is an outstanding achievement for the Saskatchewan Polytechnic Applied Research team!” says Dr. Larry Rosia, president and CEO. “Our performance on the Top 50 Research Colleges 2021 rankings provides direct evidence that we are growing our applied research capacity. Our applied research team does an excellent job of helping industry and partners capture new opportunities, solve everyday challenges and contribute to economic growth and job creation in Saskatchewan.”

“I am very proud of our researchers whose essential work is driving Sask Polytech forward. Our applied research community is constantly innovating to benefit our industry partners,” says Blum. “Sask Polytech will continue to expand our research activities and collaborations that further enhance the exceptional value we deliver to our partners.”
